The Trauma App

Robust and reliable data collection

Trauma remains the fourth leading cause of death in western countries and the leading cause of death for people under 40.  Each year in Scotland 5000 people are seriously injured and with each fatality there are two survivors with serious or permanent disability with a significant impact on quality of life. The development of a major trauma app has been driven by the development of the Scottish Trauma Network. The network seeks to redesign care to improve patient outcomes by delivery of integrated, multi-specialty care to the severely injured.

The initial phases of Emergency Department (ED) care is critical to outcome and depends on effective team working to deliver complex interventions. Team composition and familiarity with evolving care standards contribute to variations of care. New tools are required to integrate and align health care delivery within the complex systems within the ED. The development of the major trauma app will support clinicians to achieve three key aims:

  1. Robust data collection to enable forensic analysis of clinical care processes
  2. Cognitive aids to support and prompt clinicians during trauma care delivery
  3. Provision of a reliable framework to deliver care aligned to the highest clinical standards to reduce variability

Bad data in, bad data out

The granularity of collected data increases throughout the episode of care as repeat observations, clinical interaction and tests progress. The app has been developed to reflect this and each data point is stored and linked to enable clinical review. For instance, each blood pressure result recorded is stored with a time stamp allowing trends to visualised by the clinical team.

This breadth of data has never before been captured in trauma and allows real insight into trends and developments during the treatment of an individual case. Further to this it provides a much richer and more accurate data set to delve into post event and gain a fuller understanding of what’s happening in major trauma care and where improvements can be made.
